Investigators studying cellphone use of engineer in fatal Amtrak crash

Investigators trying to determine why an Amtrak train barreled into a curve at more than twice the speed limit are studying the engineer’s cellphone to see if he was distracted before the fatal crash, officials said Wednesday.

As with auto accidents or any other type of motor vehicle collision, railway incidents can be caused by “driver” or engineer error including being distracted by cell phone use.  It is important to make this part of any comprehensive investigation into why this Amtrak train derailed.
