NEW YORK (Reuters) – Four plaintiffs’ lawyers, including high-profile attorney David Boies, were appointed by a federal judge on Tuesday to lead civil litigation against Takata Corp and several car manufacturers
It will be interesting to see how the class action litigation on the Takata airbag cases unfolds. The appointment of “lead counsel” is an important first step in the process. Takata air bags have injured or killed an estimated number of people in the thousands due to an apparent “cost saving” propellant that proved to be defective in exploding and sending shrapnel. As with most products liability claims, there have been both individual lawsuits and class action claims filed. This type of litigation serves to make corporate defendants more cognizant of safety.
