Rearview cameras to be required on all cars, light trucks and buses sold in the U.S. – Christian Science Monitor

All new cars, light trucks, and buses sold in the US will be required to have rearview cameras by May 2018 in an effort to save lives. Backover accidents claim 210 victims a year, the US says.

Steven M. Sweat‘s insight:

As a personal injury attorney who has seen a fair share of back over auto accidents especially involving young children, I think requiring rear view cameras on all new vehicles is a good step towards safety.  Having said this, I don’t think these cameras can or should be used as a substitute for good sound driving practices like checking all rear and side view mirrors and turning your head 180 degrees to physically view behind your vehicle prior to backing up.  I think roll overs and other tragic incidents causing injury and death can only be prevented when drivers act prudently behind the wheel.
