The Safety Report » NHTSA Launches New Tools to Combat Pedestrian Deaths

Steven M. Sweat‘s insight:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the federal organization charged with studying and proposing changes that assist in reducing roadway accidents, has come out with a new website to assist urban planners and other municipal officials in improving pedestrian safety (“Everyone is a Pedestrian”: http://thesafetyreport.com/2013/11/nhtsa-launches-new-tools-to-combat-pedestrian-deaths/).  It also has great information for the public to raise awareness of the increasing problem of serious pedestrian accidents and fatalities.  The statistics are frightening:

  • 4,432 people were killed while walking on or near streets and highways in the U.S. in 2011
  • From 2009 to 2011, there has been an 8 percent increase in fatal accidents involving persons on foot
  • 70 percent of the deaths occur at night and many involve alcohol
