Bicycle Safety | AAA Exchange

Like motorists, bicyclists follow rules and need space to safely operate in traffic. Learn more about sharing the roadways.

Steven M. Sweat‘s insight:

Some great tips and safety videos here from AAA about motorists and cyclists sharing the road in peace.  I love the intro:

Cyclists are sons, daughters, mothers and fathers. By showing common courtesy and respect on the road, we can ensure the two-way street is a safe street for all.”

Pretty much says it all.  California law allows bikes to use the roadway just like any other “vehicle” under the California Vehicle Code.  In addition, as of this year, new legislation has been enacted that mandates that cars, trucks and SUVs who are attempting to a pass a bicycle on the road need to provide a reasonably safe buffer recommended to be at least 3 feet of space between the bike and the automobile.  Share the road!  It’s the law!
