This case presents some interesting legal issues as follows: (1) Does a public university have a duty to investigate and report domestic abuse under Title IX of the civil rights act; and (2) was that the legal cause of the death in this case where abusive behavior had been reported to University of Calfiornia housing authorities and the abuser later killed a girl and her young son while driving drunk.  The abuser was criminally convicted of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and is serving a prison sentence.  It will be interesting to see how the judge rules on the pending motion to dismiss the claim for lack of legal merit and whether this is upheld on appeal.
