Would mandatory back up cameras in vehicles prevent injury and death of children?

Steven M. Sweat‘s insight:

This is the question now being debated by the National Highway Transportation Traffic Administration and federal regulators.  As a car accident attorney in Los Angeles, I have seen my fair share of these back up incidents especially involving children.  I think many of these cases could be prevented with drivers simply using basic driving safety skills like looking backward prior to initiating the reverse movement and through the entire movement, slowing down and better observing their surroundings.  However, I do think the data shows that these cameras do significantly lower incidents.
