DA Warns Of Phony Collision Scams For Insurance Money
California was ranked third in staged auto accident claims nationwide by the National Insurance Crime Bureau in 2010 with a total of 1,619 claims, trailing only Florida and New York.
It has always been perplexing to me as to why anyone would get involved in auto insurance fraud by staging accidents. The likelihood of getting caught and the severe penalties (this is usually charged as a felony in California) as compared to the potential, short-term gain doesn’t seem to equate in my mind. Nevertheless, there are rings which get caught on a regular basis in the Golden State and doctors, chiropractors and attorneys are usually held complicit to some degree along with the participants. This only serves to detract from the value and legitimacy of the persons in California who are injured every year in real auto accidents.
