California, home to the nation’s largest immigrant population, would become the 11th state to grant immigrants who are in the country illegally the right to a driver’s license under a bill that passed the Legislature late Thursday and that Gov.
This has been a hotly debated issue here in the Golden State. Should undocumented immigrants be able to get driver’s licenses? The California legislature has decided to answer, yes. As a Los Angeles attorney that represents car accident victims, I think this is a positive step. There are far too many uninsured drivers in California and many of these are undocumented immigrants. If we can issue licenses and get these people insured, it will benefit persons involved with motor vehicle collisions have a better chance of getting compensation from a driver with valid auto insurance. It may also cut down on the number of hit and run incidents as it is estimated that many of these involve undocumented immigrants afraid of being deported if they are found driving without insurance.
