California high school football player dies after helmet-to-helmet blow 

A high school football player died after he fell into a days-long coma from a head injury during a California scrimmage, officials said.

Sad story indeed.  High School contact sports like football come with serious risks especially with regard to head trauma and concussions.  Many times these types of tragedies are not the result of negligence but, there is California case law which holds that a school or other instructional institution may be held liable for injury to athletes if the instruction provided makes the sporting activity more dangerous than normally anticipated.
