Richmond: Thousands more sue Chevron over refinery fire

Attorneys on behalf of more than 5,000 plaintiffs filed suit in Contra Costa County Superior Court against Chevron Corp. on Monday, alleging that “reckless conduct” at the oil giants Richmond refinery led to an Aug.

Steven M. Sweat‘s insight:

Lawsuits stemming from the Chevron Richmond California refinery fires and explosions have now reached over 11,000 in plaintiff’s bringing claims.  The allegations are all uniform in that they allege not just negligence but, reckless conduct that showed a conscious disregard for the rights and safety of the individuals and businesses located in and around the plant.  Under California law, this potentially entitles the claimants to punitive damages (or damages meant to punish the defendant) in addition to compensation for injuries and damage to property.
